A ‘best before’ date on a shelf-stable item is an indicator of the period when the product will be at its peak quality relating to flavour and freshness. Simply put, this means the product is still safe to eat past this date, but the quality might decline, for example, losing some of its flavour or texture. Unlike expiry dates, it is not a safety indicator, and most shelf-stable foods can be consumed well past their “best before” date if stored correctly and showing no signs of spoilage.

Mistaking best before dates as safety indicators contributes to more than 10% of all avoidable food waste (that’s 230,000 tonnes per year). A 2022 study found that 63% of the food Canadians threw away could have been consumed.
